The cross engrailed cotised refers to the cross of St Elwin to be seen in the parish in the parish church of Portlevan (a corruption of Port St Elwin) in Cornwall. St Elwin is the ancient name of the family, originating from a tenancy of the shrine chapel of St Elwin in the village of St Evan. The name and tenancy may indicate the family were hereditary shrine keepers. The lion passant between two lozenges are arms carried by a maternal ancestor, Stephen de Turnham of Turnham, Kent on a Third Crusade. The lion may be an augmentation, for Stephen de Turnham was the Treasurer for Richard I and his brother Robert, Baron Mulgrave, raised the money for the King’s ransom. Below the arms are illustrated the badge and impaled arms reflecting the armiger’s office as Warden of Greyfriars Hall Oxford.
